One of public television’s many lost battles is its obsession with competing with private individuals in their field, with millionaire contests, rather than simply spreading culture, a priority objective of a public entity that should not be obsessed with the public.
Public television policy is misunderstood when it comes to programming certain indigenous productions that they should no doubt support given their raison d’être. They insist on hiding them, as if they didn’t know what to do with them, relegating them to untimely hours on the grill, when they come to light. One of many lost battles, such as that obsession with competing with private companies in their field, with millionaire contests, rather than simply spreading culture, a priority objective of a public entity that should not be obsessed with the public.
TVE has just performed a maneuver that confirms the foregoing and sows confusion again. For some time now, the channel announced the open launch of ‘Historias para no sueño’, the mythical series by Chicho Ibáñez Serrador, with no clear date. It seemed to be the chain’s August bet for prime time. However, a piece of news came in that meant a pitcher of cold water: the four existing chapters scheduled at once, last Saturday, from 10:05 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., ship the issue in one night, failed to live up to expectations. .
It didn’t end there, as it wasn’t long before the pass was canceled in exchange for a tribute to Olivia Newton John with a ‘Grease’ session, nearly a week after the well-known actress’s death. Perhaps the criticism forced TVE to reconsider, but everything points to it being another symptom of the chain’s passivity. The remake of ‘Stories to not sleep’ is out now on Prime Video for subscribers. Of the four episodes of the project shot so far, “Freddy,” an episode directed by Paco Plaza, stands out for its own merits. Maybe one day it will air on that TV they say is ours.
