‘The Insured’, a play written by the playwright and professor at UMU, receives the awards for Best Director and Best Female Performance at the Independent Theater Artists (ATI) gala, and the Murcian director is recognized for ‘Life is a dream’

On the occasion of International Actors Day, the Independent Theater Artists (ATI) awards ceremony took place at the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center in New York. They are the Latin theater talent awards. In this town of Babelic, theater in Spanish offers a wide variety of ‘Off Broadway’ theatres. The talent of the Murcian brothers Diana and Mariano de Paco Serrano has been recognized and highlighted in the XII edition of the ATI Awards.

Director Mariano de Paco Serrano has been awarded for ‘Life is a Dream’, the text of which was adapted by his mother, Virtudes Serrano. De Paco Serrano works at the Círculo Theater in New York and represents works from the Spanish Golden Age with multiple and innovative productions. He was previously awarded for ‘El Caballero de Olmedo’ and ‘El Trickster de Sevilla’. He also received the José Luis Alonso Award from the Association of Directors of Spain. In October, it will premiere ‘Fuenteovejuna’ in New York, with the desire and hope to be able to enjoy it in Murcia in 2023. De Paco Serrano has a law degree and a doctorate in Spanish literature from the University of Murcia. He was a founder and manager of the Spanish Academy of the Performing Arts, director of the management of the Teatros del Canal and advisor to the Community of Madrid. Likewise, the artist Gemma Ibarra has been awarded Best Director and Best Female Performance with the work ‘El Assured’ written by Diana de Paco Serrano, tenured professor of Greek Philology at UMU.

Gemma Ibarra shared on her networks her “emotion, infinite gratitude to all who made this dream possible”, for this ATI Award for Best Comedy Theater Actress: “‘El assured’, by Diana De Paco, who brings us immense joy.” Two years ago, Ediciones Irreverentes released ‘Eva at six o’clock’, the last work of Diana de Paco (Murcia, 1973), and ‘Obsession Street’, in a cover binding by the painter Antonio Tapia. ‘Eva a las seis’ was premiered by the company Tríade, directed by Miguel Cegarra from Cartagena, and ‘Obsession Street’ was awarded the Palencia Award in 2008. In addition, Diana de Paco received in 2020 for the monologue ‘Casandra’ (2016), the audience award of the Teatro de la Sensación de Ciudad Real. “In the current cultural and educational crisis, we must vigorously defend Latin and Greek,” emphasizes the Murcian playwright, who claims the role of playwrights in times of pandemic.
