“We have to listen to children to know what they want to see on television”

This journalist from La Rioja presents ‘La casa de los challenges’, the Boing children’s channel competition that will premiere this Monday for its fourth season

Aiming to recapture “the value of playing as a family” with “a great sense of humor,” Boing will premiere the fourth season of “The House of Challenges” this afternoon (8:15 p.m.), a daily competition on production that David Moreno (Logroño, 33 years) drives. Last year, Mediaset’s themed channel format became the children’s program with the highest audience among children, with a viewership share of 19.2% among viewers aged 4 to 12.

– More and more families are presenting themselves to the competition.

-This year about 5,000 families have registered, much more than last year. It has been noted that ‘The House of Challenges’ is increasingly affecting the family audience. Children and parents recognize us and are very grateful for the content we create. It is a program to play with the family and that is expensive.

Can children lose better than adults?

-No doubt, but in ‘The House of Challenges’ nobody loses. The most important thing about this program is to participate, because it is done in such a way that chance decides the winner. The main thing is to have fun and the final result does not matter.

– Are they unmanageable during the shooting?

-They’re responsible and it looks like they’ve been in front of the cameras all their lives. They are aware when something needs to be repeated at the times when we are wrong. They understand the language of television the moment they enter the set. They make it very easy for you.

-What novelties will the new season bring?

-This year we keep the challenges that kids like the most, but there are new and bigger tests because we have a more spacious house. We deleted a partition to expand. The decoration will also be more colorful, with some areas with a retro touch and a giant sculpture. And of course new challenges in which I will get dirty. I’m going to be a different player. I can’t tell you what they are, but this year we’re going to look at the home kitchen and what happens when you pick the right oven or the wrong one. One makes you mad and the other doesn’t.

-Four seasons on television is not common these days.

-I think the key lies in the participants. It may sound like what I’m saying is typical, but the participants know better than anyone what the format looks like. They master it perfectly and know what to do. They know that the prize comes to play the program and that makes them more uninhibited and committed to the fun. And as a spectator, when you see them having a good time, you have fun too.

Is there camaraderie among the children?

-This year we lived a few days where we had to stop recording because we got very excited. I couldn’t talk, we shed a tear. We faced one last challenge and the kids held hands before recording. Very nice things were said and it didn’t matter who won the challenge. These are our children and this is the message we want to convey: positivity, camaraderie and that they are good people.

-It is a Spanish format, are there other countries interested in the program?

-It is a Spanish product and was adapted for Mediaset in Italy. This year, ‘The house of challenges’, the original program from Spain, will air for the first time in Portugal with a dubbed version on Cartoon Network. It was very funny to see myself in Portuguese because it is a friend who gave me a voice. He is a boy named Joao Duarte and he is an actor who works in the theater.

-He sang the soundtrack to ‘Pokémon’ and now they are chain partners. How did this opportunity arise?

-I was very young, about 17 years old, and I presented, which was the first thing I did on television, a program called ‘Pokémon Planet’ that aired on Jetix. During one of my visits to the dubbing studio for the series, they asked me to sing the song and of course I told them. I passed a series of tests and ended up singing two of the “Pokémon” seasons. It’s very strong because sometimes I listen to myself and it’s very cool.

-What should be done to prevent children from watching television?

-I have a lot of respect for my colleagues from other children’s networks, who also program great, but what I know about Boing is that it is a safe place for children and parents. As a society, we sometimes have to listen to children to know what they want to see and do.

– What other program would you like to present?

-I am very happy with family entertainment. I would like to be the typical game show host, of a ‘talent show’ like ‘Got Talent’ or ‘Idol Kids’. Or also in lifelong programs, such as ‘Alta tension’, that fascinates me. Hopefully Mediaset will give me the chance one day.
