It’s a ‘total guide’ to the vagina and it’s called ‘Pussypedia’. The prestigious publishing house specializing in encyclopedias and dictionaries Larousse publishes a book of almost 400 pages in which only the female genital tract is discussed. The chapters cover the “parts”, menstruation, intercourse, masturbation, abortion, contraception, infection and reproduction. The title, as striking as the band’s fuchsia color, comes from a play on words with an Anglo-Saxon euphemism, “pussy” (which sometimes refers to the vulva and others to cats), to talk about the “pussy,” as its Spanish equivalent would be.

“The penis has been the subject of all kinds of research for decades, but until four days ago we hardly knew what the clitoris looked like,” Larousse justifies in his promotion. While this explanation is not exact, there is a new and documented approach, as the female pleasure member was scientifically described in the 16th century. His approach is even funny.

Written by Zoe Mendelson, an editor and “information designer” who is a graduate of North American Columbia University, a topic that some people may find uncomfortable is approached naturally (if not, ask Rigoberta Bandini, who just got off the breasts came in her protest song ‘Ah, mama’).

On a confessional note, Mendelson devoted four years to this work, which was first published in English on a freely accessible website. It was such a success that it made the leap to paper and the publishing market, with translations into French, Italian and Spanish. With an extensive supporting bibliography, he bases his dissertation on the existence of the ‘G-spot’ or obstetric care, among hundreds of other topics.

“This project has opened my view of the amazing diversity of bodies that exist in the world and the infinite spectrum of human expression,” said Conejo, two-time winner of the Young Creators grant, when presenting the work.

Larousse has a history of these types of posts that can cause stings. Remembered is his ‘Encyclopedia of Sexuality’, which placed eroticism in thousands of homes during the late Franco period. And now, with the logic of the times, he approaches the sexual issue from a different angle. With a strong feminist perspective, mixing descriptive rigor with ideology and a condemnation of “patriarchy,” the new encyclopedia also disproves popular notions of the vagina.
