The painting would not have been damaged after the attack, reports the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague

New attack by ‘Just Stop Oil’ action group. After throwing tomato soup at the painting ‘Vase of Fourteen Sunflowers’ by Vincent van Gogh in the National Gallery; or throwing pies at the figure of Carlos III at Madame Tussauds in London; The organization attacked the famous painting ‘The girl with a pearl earring’ by the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer in the Mauritshuis in The Hague on Thursday.

According to the NOS, three people have been arrested after they threw the substance against the oil. The two activists in the image wear white t-shirts as members of the ‘Just Stop Oil’ organization. Footage shared on social networks shows one of the activists approaching the painting, giving the feeling of using a marker to mark it, while another person pours a can of tomato sauce into the activist’s shirt.

The Mauritshuis has indicated that the work, protected under glass, would not have suffered any damage. The room remains closed at this time while the police investigate what happened. The art gallery, in turn, has complained about the “helplessness” of the art and condemned any attempt to damage the works, regardless of their objectives. In recent weeks there have been protests at museums around the world, with incidents in Germany, the UK and France. ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, dating from 1665, is one of the most recognizable works in the Mauritshuis, partly because of its translation into a novel and a film.
