Bringing science to the streets, UMU’s most extraordinary mission

Date:

After organizing hundreds of workshops during the Night of the Researchers and participating in the Week of Science and Technology, their initiatives reach Molina

After the successful participation in the European Night of Researchers – Mednight Goes to School, which had more than 3,000 visitors and 100 workshops, and in Science and Technology Week, where more than 10,000 people attended and more than 120 experiments are planned, the University of Murcia is once again taking to the streets to showcase the science of everyday life and how the institution explores the world around us.

It is the mission of the II Week of Scientific Culture to be held in Molina de Segura until November 11, in which you can enjoy a series of activities programmed by the Ministry of Culture and Civic Participation of the Molina de Segura City Council, the Permanent Headquarters of the University of Murcia in Molina de Segura and the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i) of the Office of the Vice-President for Transmission, Communication and Scientific Dissemination in collaboration with the Molina Medical Studies Foundation and the Interneighborhood Federation of the same municipality.

On the program are activities for everyone. For example, on Sunday 6 November at noon, the tourist-scientific route MurCiencia, created by UCC+i of the UMU, will take place. Led by scientific communicator David Meseguer, attendees will be able to learn about the ins and outs and famous people who have cultivated science and maintained a close relationship with the city of Murcia, such as Marie Curie or José Echegaray. Registrations are made via the municipality on the telephone 968 38 85 19.

On Tuesday, November 8, the informative lecture ‘The Science of the Champions’ will take place, by José Manuel López Nicolás, Vice-Rector of Transfer, Communication and Scientific Dissemination of the institution and renowned scientific disseminator.

In this presentation, attendees can discover the physics, chemistry or technology behind top sport in the casual way that characterizes López Nicolás.

There will also be room to learn more about the historical legacy of the Murcia region with the conference ‘Past, history and memory: what happened, has happened?’ On Wednesday, November 9, researchers from the Faculty of Education Laura Arias Ferrer and Alejandro Egea will dismantle some of society’s most established historical hoaxes. Both sessions take place at the Museo del Enclave de la Muralla de Molina (MUDEM) at 6:00 PM and have free entry until full capacity is reached.

The Week of Scientific Culture will have as a final highlight the activity ‘De Cañas con la Ciencia’, a meeting with young researchers in which topics of great importance or social importance to citizens can be discovered, such as the criminological analysis of the associated risks on the antisocial behavior of adolescents or what role women really played in art history and why it is unknown, including small talks held at 7.30pm in the relaxed atmosphere of the Rockabilly Gastrobar.
