‘Muerte Bat’, by Carlos Saiz, singles in the animation category, and ‘Sorda’, by Eva Libertad and Nuria Muñoz, in fiction
Murcian filmmakers’ short films ‘Muerte Bat’, by Carlos Saiz, and ‘Sorda’, by Eva Libertad and Nuria Muñoz Ortín, are among the candidates for the Goya 2023 to be presented on 11 February in Seville. In the animation category, there are ten titles, including ‘Bat Death’, but only five will be nominated, and ‘Sorda’ does so in the fiction category, where fifteen titles compete, among which the five finalists are chosen.
‘Murciélago Death’ takes as its starting point Portmán (La Unión) and the environmental disaster of the bay. The project of Carlos Saiz (‘La Hoguera’) aims to portray the consequences of the disaster for the population of this old mining town by means of metaphors and exaggeration. José Saiz, the director’s brother, has drawn and animated the images that make up the short film produced by Tomás Peña, a native of La Unión. Another pillar of the team is Miguel Peña (Halley), who is responsible for composing the music and designing the sound accompanying the illustrations for the duration of 3’11 minutes. The work is supported by Cultural Reagents of Murcia City Council.
‘Sorda’ tells the story of Ángela (Miriam Garlo) and Darío (Pepe Galera). They are a couple and have six chickens, four dogs, a garden and many communication problems. She is deaf and he hears. Now they are also going to have a child. The work has the support of Nexus and the Molina City Council.
Libertad and Muñoz co-direct the production house Nexus CreaFilms in which they co-direct their own projects such as ‘Leo and Alex in the 21st century’, a short film with more than 70 selections and 3 awards, candidate for the Goya 2021; ‘Nikolina’, a TV movie that premiered at the European International Fantastic Film Festival SOMBRA 2020, with a special mention for the main character. They have also produced the short films ‘Mentiste, Amanda’ and ‘Eli’ directed by Álvaro López Alba. ‘Ángela en el mundo’ is the title of the feature film inspired by ‘Sorda’ with the support of the Autonomous Community and the ICA.
