A “human legacy” of Murcia’s favorite and adopted children

Frasquito Fernández Egea presents today in the annex the second part of this work with the agreements between 2010 and 2022

Frasquito Fernández Egea presents today in Murcia the second part of ‘Favorite and adopted children of the city of Murcia’, which includes the children named between 2010 and 2022, including Manuel Sánchez Baena, MAN, creator of Tío Pencho; the actress Pepa Aniorte, the Hispanist Gonzalo Sobejano or the doctor Pascual Parrilla, among many others. The presentation ceremony will take place this Tuesday at 7:30 pm at the Moneo building in Murcia, presided over by the mayor, José Antonio Serrano, and with the participation of journalists Ismael Galiana Alonso and Adolfo Fernández Aguilar. “It’s that,” Frasquito tells LA VERDAD, “we have a very enriching human heritage of characters who have done things for Murcia, and in many cases have been forgotten.” Even favorite and adopted children are forgotten, Fernández Egea complains. “That’s why I made the book.”

Among the favored and adopted children named by the plenary of the Murcia City Council over the past 12 years, for example, stands out the workers’ priest Pepe Tornel, one of the promoters of the cause of burial in Murcia and a promoter of interculturality in neighborhoods such as Progress and Los Rosales (El Palmar). «I was a few years – Frasquito recalls – president of the neighborhood association of La Flota, when the federation of neighborhood associations worked very well, and today it has disappeared. Then there was Pepe Tornel who represented the Barrio de las Ranas, as Progress is also called, and when we organized things, some would say to him: “But Pepe, if you are a priest…!” And he always said that he was also a mason, and it is true that he had been, as well as a priest».

This part also features José Luis Castillo Puche, a Yeclano writer, who accidentally did not enter the previous part. “Of course there are many Murcians and Murcians who deserve to be adopted”, but there must be a series of coincidences, including that the petition is submitted by a political group to the plenary session of the city council and that it has the support of the Murcian society.

One of those favorite sons is Ángel Belmonte, an industrialist and actor, “who spends millions every year on the Santa Claus Parade, a character he’s played every Christmas for decades,” appreciates Frasquito, who is described by Fernández Aguilar as a ” serving soldier of the Murcia”.

Among those included in the book are also the singer and composer Mari Trini, the journalist and writer Carlos del Amor, the cyclist Alejandro Valverde, troveros such as the Patiñero and the Repuntín, the academics Juan Torres Fontes and Francisco Sánchez Bautista, the cook Raimundo González or the poets Dionisia García and Carmen Montero. The number of women and men on this list of those distinguished by the consistory is infinitely unbalanced.

A discovery that this book contributes, and which has been forgotten by time, is the chapter on illustrious sons, “a different category from that of adoptive and favored sons that premiered in Murcia with the so-called ‘Abanilla martyrs'”: José Campillo, Blas Carles, José Izquierdo and Mariano Munuera, who died in 1834 in a confrontation with Carlist forces.
