The International Day of Flamenco is commemorated this Wednesday in Murcia with performances in the main squares of the city. There will be flamenco exhibitions, a cajón master class, a fandango flash mob, tanguillos and sevillanas, and a flamenco t-shirt contest, according to what the councilor of culture, Pedro García Rex, indicated yesterday.

The Plazas de la Merced, Santo Domingo, Teatro Romea, de la Cruz and Glorieta de España are the chosen spaces for the performances, between 10am and 7pm. An initiative of the Department of Culture and the Dance Conservatory of Murcia, which aims to spread flamenco in all its aspects. Students from Primary and Vocational Education of the specialties Flamenco Dance and Spanish Dance of the Murcia Dance Conservatory will intervene throughout the day.

In Murcia, the festival kicks off at 10am with performances in the Plaza de la Merced. At 10:30 am at the Plaza de Santo Domingo, at 11:00 am at the Plaza del Teatro Romea, at 11:30 am at the Plaza de la Cruz and at 12:00 pm at the Glorieta de España. At 13:00, Cardenal Belluga Square will host the cajón master class for students from 3rd to 6th year of the Professional Schools of Flamenco Dance and Spanish Dance. It consists of a demonstration with 60 flamenco cajones by groups of students in which they demonstrate what they have learned in the Masterclass the day before, interspersed with dancing, singing and live music by the musicians.

They will also do a ‘flash mob’ of choreography for fandangos by groups, in the center of the circle formed by the 60 artists, tanguillos and sevillanas in the afternoon, and the award ceremony for the flamenco t-shirt competition designed and created by the students. The musicians will perform some sevillanas so that any passer-by who dares can dance them on the square with the students of the conservatory. The program will be repeated from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the same squares.

International Flamenco Day has been celebrated around the world every November 16 since UNESCO declared the Intangible Heritage of Humanity at the congress that took place in Kenya in 2010.
