Until then, the works that make up ‘An Individual Vision of Reality’ can be enjoyed at the Las Claras Cultural Center in Murcia.
The Cajamurcia Foundation has decided to open the exhibition ‘Esteban Vicente. An individual vision of reality’ until Sunday 22 January, extending the opportunity to enjoy this contemporary art installation at the Las Claras Cultural Center in Murcia for two weeks. The exhibition, which was originally scheduled to close on January 8, can be visited Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. (except Friday, January 6, 2019). which remains closed); and on Sundays and public holidays, in the morning: from 11 am to 2 pm
Organized by the Fundación Cajamurcia in collaboration with the Esteban Vicente Museum of Contemporary Art (Segovia), the exhibition traces a journey through the different life and artistic stages of Esteban Vicente (Segovia, 1903-New York, 2001), a Spanish painter who actively participated in the movement of American abstract expressionism and contributed to its development.
The 53 works on display come largely from the permanent collection of the aforementioned museum dedicated to the artist in his native Segovia, to which are added some pieces from other public and private collections. Among the latter are several paintings he painted between the 1920s and 1930s when he was in Murcia with his friend Juan Bonafé.
«With Bonafé he shared a studio on the Paseo del Prado, in Madrid, and with him he made his debut by uncovering an exhibition center [el Ateneo de Madrid, en 1928]», describes the exhibition’s curator, Ana Doldán de Cáceres, about the relationship between the two artists. «Since 1922, summer stays have taken place in the house of the Bonafé family in La Alberca (Murcia) and the painter portrays his people and his landscapes. He knew how to capture the light and color of this very special landscape.” It is also Juan Bonafé, “the key that opens the relationship with the group from Murcia and especially with the great protector of letters Juan Guerrero Ruiz, who invited him to illustrate three copies of ‘Verso y Prosa'”, explains the Commissioner . Specifically, it was issues 6, 7 and 10, published in 1927.
The exhibition is completed with a selection of small sculptures made between 1968 and 1997, from pieces found in his studio.
