Classical music will get more space in Cartagena this year. The city council and the Symphony Orchestra of the port city have created the necessary instruments to assemble an orchestra of young talents, made up of performers between the ages of 12 and 18. This was announced yesterday by the mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, during the presentation of this initiative, which aims “to make come true the dream of many children to fully practice as a musician”.
The selection process will begin in a few days, when the bases will be made official, explained the director of the Cartagena Symphony Orchestra, Leonardo Martínez, promoter of this cultural project. His idea is that he can give the first concert as early as May.
“This new band does double duty. On the one hand, it covers the void that existed in terms of a social place to share the passion for music with the youngest. And on the other hand, it will provide artistic and quality education to the young talents of the city,” Martínez assured. This musician feels that “it is a luxury for Cartagena to have an orchestra with these characteristics”.
The new thing about this musical group is that the members will have a schedule of regular rehearsals from February to May. This new group was born to become the quarry of the two orchestras the city already has: the Cartagena Symphony Orchestra and the Cartagena Youth Symphony Orchestra. In this way, the city can continue to grow as a “municipality open to all kinds of music, including classical”, the mayor emphasized.
At the end of the presentation, Sofía Guillamón, 11 years old, performed. He interpreted Paganini’s Capricho number 24. At her young age, the young woman has already won several national awards for her virtuosity and has a scholarship in Barcelona.
