‘Government presence in the RTVE news is not offensive’

Date:

The president of the Corporation, Elena Sánchez, denies that the “TV newscasts” ignore Feijóo and ugly the PP that it “refuses” to participate in “La noche en 24 horas”

The scuffle between RTVE and the Partido Popular led to the last public appearance of the interim president, Elena Sánchez. The pre-election atmosphere also crept into the Senate with harsh accusations about the partisan use of everyone’s television. The popular channels expressed their discomfort with the disproportionality that, in their view, the public broadcaster covers the main opposition party, going so far as to have their information services “ignore” Alberto Núñez Feijóo, criticizing the treatment of some of the news that affects conservatives . But the head of the company, in office after the resignation of his predecessor, José Manuel Pérez Tornero, denied most of it: “The presence of the government in the ‘Telediarios’ is not an insult.”

During her appearance on the RTVE Joint Committee in the Upper House, Elena Sánchez used data to refute the PP’s argument, which abused its question time to question the impartiality of the news on the public channel. He explained that in the ‘TV news’ there is a count of times allocated to each parliamentary group according to their electoral representation and he assured that in December 34% of the time spent on political information was spent on the government was spent (PSOE and Unidas Podemos), compared to the 25% occupied by the PP. Some data, he noted, differs from those of 2016 and 2017, when Mariano Rajoy ruled and on public television, there was “a clear imbalance between the presence of the government and the majority of the opposition party”.

In this sense, RTVE’s interim president defended the increased executive presence in the ‘Telediarios’ because, she recalled, it is justified by both the company’s executive mandate and the style book. “It is coherent that government information takes up more time and space, because its actions have an impact on citizens’ lives and must be disseminated and explained,” Elena Sánchez quoted, defending the work of public company professionals “that plurality and proportionality prevail” in their information. He also responded to Guillermo Díaz (Citizens)’s question about whether there is pressure from Moncloa: “No indication has been given and I am not aware that it has been given to any member of the Board of Directors.”

However, the statements failed to convince PP representatives, who cited the tone of criticism and insinuated that public television was ignoring Feijóo’s public appearances. Inadequate treatment of the opposition leader, according to the people, as a result of which the public mainly chooses the news from other channels, referring to the unwieldy leadership of Antena 3 compared to TVE’s La 1. But Elena Sánchez again used data to answer the senators: “RTVE is not ignoring the opposition leader. In the past quarter, a total of 53 minutes of statements by Feijóo and the president of the government were issued, one hour and two minutes.

The interim president complained that the PP leader had been invited “on four occasions” to “La noche en 24 horas”, the night gathering presented by journalist Xabier Fortes, and “has refused to participate”. “We are interested in your opinion on important matters. We have been shouting ‘Genoa’ for weeks and they are refusing to send a representative of the People’s Party to our broadcasts,” he explained. In this regard, Senator Jaime de los Santos (PP) complained about the treatment of the House presenters to the people’s leaders during the interviews on the morning of “La hora de La 1” and addressed the “not very brilliant neutrality” the imprisonment of a socialist councilor for the cause of the EEA of Andalusia.

Elena Sánchez also expressed her confidence in continuing the upward trend of La 1 after taking second place from Telecinco in December with the broadcast of the Qatar Soccer World Cup and improving the reputation of the public company in the eyes of the public. He also brought forward three series that will air on RTVE in the coming months: ‘Dr. García’s Patients’, based on the novel by Almudena Grande; ‘Flores de hierro’, a fiction that will recreate the massacre of the Atocha lawyers; and ‘Demokracia’, a police thriller set in the Transition.

Regarding the oppositions in RTVE, Manuel Mariscal (Vox) assured that they look “very bad” because according to the basis of the call, RTVE could be “more politicized” and “they will have no guarantees for those who do not have sponsors in UGT , PSOE or Podemos » For its part, the interim president argued that “in the coming days” the “specific phases” for the positions will be published and states that the first tests of “some processes, with few applications” in can start in the second quarter of 2023. We believe that the contradictions will be one of the most powerful levers of change to start the process of profound transformation to adapt to the realities of the 21st century,” he added . Finally, he confirmed that he will abide by the courts’ opinion on his appointment to the company: “My respect for his decisions is absolute.”
