The Teatro Real opens a children’s section in an artillery barracks

Date:

With 7,700 square meters, it has several multipurpose rooms and a main room with more than 400 seats

The Teatro Real already has a ‘branch’ for children and young people. Together with the Madrid City Council, it has rehabilitated a new stage space in the Daoiz y Velarde Cultural Center, in the Retiro district. The Madrid City Council has carried out actions worth €8.2 million to complete the extensive rehabilitation of the old artillery barracks now dedicated to music.

In October, the City Council and the Colosseum Lyrical signed an agreement to launch this new project, called ‘Real Teatro de Retiro’, born “with the aim of becoming a cultural and artistic reference space for children and young people.” It offers “a performing arts approach and learning”, which includes opera, dance, theatre, puppetry, musical storytelling, workshops and other activities for the whole family.

With 7,700 square meters on four floors, the building has a large space for cultural events and exhibitions, a Great Hall (with a large stage and capacity for 330 seats), a Multipurpose Hall (with 72 seats in retractable stands and podium multipurpose space ), rehearsal rooms, workshops and other auxiliary units. The extensive rehabilitation of the centennial building from the end of the 19th century has been completed with an intervention “which has sought a balance between the original architecture and the current functions”.

Thus, El Real will develop its El Real Junior programming in this new space dedicated to children, young people and families “to initiate the youngest in the musical and artistic world, arouse their curiosity and interest and promote their learning”. It offers opera, dance, musical stories, puppets, film and didactic concerts, always with a playful approach.

There are family and school features of each title, supplemented by a didactic guide – free access through the Teatro Real website for parents and teachers – offering detailed information about the show and practical exercises to have a broader view. the world of entertainment they come to enjoy.

The activity of the Inclusive Musical Group (AMI) will also move from the Teatro Real to this new space. The AMI is an initiative of national and international reference that shows how the inclusion of neurodiversity is possible in a space of musical artistic excellence, promoting the different individual capacities with initiatives aimed at promoting their approach to music and culture .

On April 15, the first performance of the current children’s season will take place at the Real Teatro de Retiro, ‘Cinderella’ in a version by composer Pauline Viardot (1821-1910) in an adaptation by director Guillermo Amaya, performed by seven young soloists of different nationalities, from the Crescendo training program of the Fundación de Amigos del Teatro Real.

The second activity is the play ‘Praga, 1941’ by Paco Gámez, for children from 12 years old. A total of 14 functions are offered: eight school and six family. On May 19, the baroque zarzuela arrives with dolls ‘Yo soy la locura’, recommended from 7 years and 22 with functions: 10 schoolchildren and 12 relatives.

the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida; the delegate of Culture, Tourism and Sports, Andrea Levy, the general director of the Teatro Real, Ignacio García-Belenguer and its president Gregorio Marañón, who claimed that it is an “ambitious” project and specified that it is the first time that the Madrid Coliseum “he dedicates all his knowledge and all his experience and resources to a stage space like this”.
