Culture acquires a rare 16th-century tapestry for a million euros

Date:

Using the right of first refusal, the Ministry of Culture has acquired the rare and valuable tapestry ‘The Triumph of Time’ for one million euros. It is a unique piece in the world and of exceptional quality from a historical and artistic point of view. Your destination is the Gallery of the Royal Collections of the National Heritage, a museum that opens this summer and houses the best and most extensive tapestry in the world.

‘The Triumph of Time’ is a flamenco piece from the early 16th century. “A cloth of silk and wool, unique in the world and with no known replicas,” says Culture. «This is an exceptional work, both for its great artistic quality and for the theme it displays, related to the poem ‘I Trionfi’ from the Cancionere’ by Francesco Petrarch.

Those verses inspired a series of allegorical tapestries known as “The Triumphs of Petrarch,” of which only one other copy is currently known, “The Triumph of Fame,” which resides in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and with which the Spanish piece «bears great stylistic and compositional similarities».

Some technical aspects, such as the number of threads per square centimeter of the warp, between 7 and 8, as well as the quality of the materials with which it is made, “show that this is a work of great technical mastery and virtuosity,” Culture says. . He also notes the vibrancy of the colors used in the tapestry, “among which the different shades of blue, green and red stand out, showing the high quality of the dyes used.”

In addition to its remarkable artistic value, the tapestry is of great historical importance, as it was probably connected to the collection of Queen Isabella the Catholic and, over time, was part of one of the most prestigious collections of tapestries in Spain, that of the tombs of Adanero and Marquises of Castro-Serna.

The tapestry is displayed in one of the rooms of the monumental building of Emilio Tuñón and the late Luis Moreno Mansilla, a formidable granite building of more than 40,000 square meters, 9,000 of which are for exhibition. Annex to the Cathedral of La Almudena and the Royal Palace of Madrid, completed between 2006 and 2016, which is expected to open this summer after nearly a decade of delay. The museum is hosting an inaugural exhibition of 650 pieces, of the more than 160,000 that comprise the royal collections, featuring tapestries, paintings, sculptures, armor and decorative arts and pieces signed by Titian, Velázquez, Caravaggio or Goya.

The purchase agreement, adopted by the Council for Qualification, Valuation and Export of Spanish Historical Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, corresponds to a transfer between individuals. The work had initiated a file for its declaration as an asset of cultural interest by the Ministry of Culture of the Community of Madrid.
