a universal language

Date:

In her message for World Dance Day 2023, Chinese dancer and choreographer Yang Liping simply cites nature as the source of inspiration for her creations. Starting from the observation of what surrounds us, each human’s feelings find in dance the key that opens a form of communication without boundaries through their own body language of gestures and habitual movements. If we go back to the 18th century, Jean-Jorge Noverre, a French master to whom this day is dedicated, already claimed that, given the boredom and sophistication of his contemporaries, routine and artificiality, reforms will be introduced to replace stereotypical conventional gestures through rational movements that facilitate understanding for all. Recalling the message of 2022, Korean Ballet director Sue Jig Kang spoke of creating dance as a temporary art created by body and soul, which reclaims energy, is a universal language projected in choreographic creations. Noverre’s rules at the time were something new. In our time, some contemporary lines of work seek a form of direct communication that presents itself as an indictment of current situations. Others, including academic dance, classical dance, Spanish dance, flamenco… are studied and enjoyed while preserving the heritage left by great creators. Without forgetting the folkloric, popular and urban dances that are so attractive in streets or rooms at certain ages, the dance fortunately penetrates us and arouses feelings and forms. We can all dance, of course share those moments where we feel equal and the adrenaline levels increase. Then we can participate as an audience and in the work of others. There are a thousand ways to feel the dance. And the basic principles of dancing for others require that the spaces dedicated to the shows have a room that fills the capacity and contributes to the continuation of quality and guaranteed works on stage. With everything we can continue to enjoy dance as part of nature and its universal language.
