The festival insists in its next edition, which will be held in Cartagena from 27 this month to 5 June, to reflect on the ecological crisis.

The XII edition of the Mucho Más Mayo Festival will be held from May 27 to June 5 in Cartagena. Promoted by the City Council’s Ministry of Culture, which aims to raise awareness about the environmental issue through art, the competition will have nine workshops, most of them free, in the training lab. ‘Upstairs, live together, repopulate. “Art and politics of the living” is the motto of the competition in this edition, whose program was presented yesterday, and which will once again reflect on the ecological crisis, especially on the disappearance of some species. In addition, the official poster was unveiled, a work by Juan Fardo in which a “symbiosis between nature and technology, between what has always been and what we can create, is performed. Always expressing balance and symmetry as the backbone,” said the competition coordinator, Patricio Hernández.

David Martínez, Councilor for Culture, recalled that the festival “re-proposes to use the public space and other unconventional spaces in the municipality to incorporate a series of experimental processes that integrate emerging artistic practices, working with citizens, participation, arts education and cultural production.

For this reason, the training program includes nine workshops, three in the city and six in the invited neighborhoods, the municipalities of La Palma and Pozo Estrecho.

The registration period for these courses, which will offer a total of 175 places, is now open. Seats must be reserved through the official website of the event: muchomasmayo.cartagena.es.

The program of training workshops, in which the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Murcia and the platform Pact for the Mar Menor have collaborated, will start on Saturday, May 28 at the Youth Resources Center with ‘Monodia Fiera del Agua’, taught by the artist Regina de Miguel.

From May 30 to June 2, the Public Art Workshop will be held at the Ramón Alonso Luzzy Cultural Center, in collaboration with the Popular University of Cartagena. After a theoretical contact with art historian Eva Cagigal, they set to work on personal projects, guided and advised by artist Eduardo Balanza.

The city will also host the workshop ‘Cartagena 2056. Collective Imagination for the Future of the Area’, by María Ptqk, at the Youth Resources Center on Saturday 4 June. The aim is to create a space for debate about, among other things, the sustainability of life.

The activities in Pozo Estrecho start with the workshop given by Mª Ángeles García, from ANSE, ‘SOS Anguilas. Get to know these fish, their home and help them with their migration’. This event will take place on Saturday, May 28 at the Civic Center in the area.

On Sunday, May 29, outside the premises of the Association of Housewives of La Palma, ‘Mariposas de arena’ will start, an initiative to think about preserving the environment.

On Saturday, June 4, the Center for Retirees of La Palma organizes the workshop ‘Trackers and researchers of exotic species’. It is also given by ANSE. That same day, the Birds in the soul space of La Guía organize the activity ‘Immerse yourself in nature through art’ –7 euros–, which uses elements such as clay to reconnect with other living beings.

In addition, music lovers have an appointment the same day at the Plaza de los Pérez de Abajo in La Palma. There will be a workshop to make musical instruments with clay.

The headquarters of Amas de Casa de Pozo Estrecho will host the last activity, on Sunday 5 June. It will be a kusamono workshop, a Japanese composition of wild plants and flowers, on pots, trays, trunks or stones.
