‘JFK: Case Review’ and Other Premieres

Date:

Just as he did in 1991 with “JFK,” a masterpiece of editing, Oliver Stone returns to Dallas to dismantle the official version of President Kennedy’s assassination based on documents released in recent years. This is an exhaustive documentary filmed with the usual guts of the director of ‘Platoon’, who no longer holds the position in the industry he held in the ’90s, but is as combative as ever.

John Williams no longer stands behind the music and the stars have been replaced by Stone himself, who roams Dallas’ “silent crime scene” Dealey Plaza in search of the elusive truth. The film, step by step, dismantles the theory of the ‘magic bullet’ emanating from a single attacker’s gun. It shows that Lee Harvey Oswald was a scapegoat, that he wasn’t even in the library from which he allegedly shot. The CIA and FBI have manipulated all the evidence, and the Warren Commission report is a hoax that dismantles the author of “Natural Born Assassins” one step at a time.

The protagonists of this comedy by Marc Crehuet, employees of a cosmetics company celebrating its 50th anniversary, talk to their reflection. Hence the title of this extraordinary comedy, which is difficult to understand, but which in the end works thanks to a cast led by Natalia de Molina, Santi Millán, Carlos Areces, Malena Alterio and Carlos Bardem. In addition to the misery of labor, the film draws blood from our nerves and anxieties, in addition to the bewilderment of the characters in the face of the new realities related to feminism, political correctness or transsexuality. Just to see Carlos Areces sing a song by Glenn Medeiros in Spanish is worth the film, in which the lamented Verónica Forqué makes his last appearance in cinemas.

Scotsman Gerard Butler, who like Liam Neeson is becoming a genre in his own right, is a legendary and feared assassin in a thriller by Joe Carnahan (“Hot Aces”), who describes the film as “a western neo-feminist from the 70s with a bit of black. The cast is completed by Frank Grillo (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), who plays a con man in mortal danger, and Alexis Louder (“Watchmen”), the novice cop with an insatiable appetite for justice. The only setting in the film is a police station, which inevitably refers to John Carpenter’s classic “Assault on the 13th Precinct Police Station.”

The feature film debut of Costa Rican-Swedish director Nathalie Álvarez Mesén is a story full of mysticism and sensuality, in which the sexual awakening of Clara, a 40-year-old woman, is told in an environment close to magical realism. Starring dancer Wendy Chinchilla Araya, the film was presented at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival last year and received critical acclaim. Clara, the main character, is believed to have a special relationship with God. As a “healer,” she supports a family and a city in need of hope, while finding solace in her relationship with the natural world. After years of being controlled by her mother’s repressive care, her sexual desires are aroused when she is attracted to her niece’s new boyfriend. This newly awakened power leads Clara into unknown territory, allowing her to transcend both physical and mystical boundaries. Strengthened by her self-discovery, she gradually breaks out of her ‘sacred’ role and begins to heal herself.
