TVE hands over the Sanfermines bull run to ETB for broadcast in Basque

Date:

From state television, they insist it is a “cooperation agreement” in which more content has been exchanged

It is a “cooperation agreement” between two public networks. This is how RTVE is responding to the controversy surrounding the broadcast of the traditional Sanfermines running of the bulls on ETB, which will broadcast the traditional annual event in Pamplona in Basque from 7 July. However, the decision caused some inconvenience to opposition parties in Congress.

The PP accused the public company of having signed an “unbalanced” and “missing justification agreement”, while the president, José Manuel Pérez Tornero, defended that it is not a transfer “or a gift”, but “an exchange ” of content for a channel in Basque, ETB1, “which has a very low distribution and audience”, a similar argument also made this Thursday by the Director of Originals of RTVE, Ana María Bordas, during the presentation of the coverage of Sanfermines.

In particular, on June 11, ETB handed over the signal for the historic Fito and Fitipaldis concert of San Mamés in Bilbao to RTVE, which has recorded great audience data on La 2 (6% share and 594,000 viewers), in addition to concluding other television collaboration agreements. for the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Public television also signed another agreement to broadcast the running of the bulls on Navarra Television, although it denied transferring rights to other autonomous communities, such as Telemadrid or Castilla-La Mancha Media, which had expressed an interest in offering them. It’s not for less, because the broadcast of this traditional event attracts almost 70% of the audience at 8 in the morning.

In addition, for this edition of San Fermín, which returns to Pamplona after the two-year break due to the pandemic, RTVE will rely on a new team to broadcast the festival after the retirement of Javier Solano, the voice that dictates the course of the bulls for the public broadcaster since 1982. He will be replaced by an experienced runner from San Sebastian, Teo Lázaro Armendáriz, while Julian Iantzi and Ana Prada will join him with the special program starting shortly after 7 am on La 1.
