The orchestra with members from 17 European countries is preparing a concert on July 14 at the National Auditorium in Madrid
After four years, 140 emerging artists from 17 European countries return to the stage as part of the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra (Seyo) programme. This time they do it for the first time in Madrid. They will come together to celebrate music as a vehicle for social transformation.
Children and young people aged 12 to 20 will take part in public events and training activities in the Spanish capital for nine days. The closing act is in the National Auditorium, where great works by Bach, Sibelius, Holst and Mussorgsky will be played by the new musicians. The concert is the culmination of the sixth edition of the summer residence, which takes place every two years, but had to be postponed to 2020 due to the pandemic.
“We play to change the world.” This is the motto of the program which aims, through free education, above all to make an impact on low-income families and those at risk of social exclusion across the continent. Several Spanish orchestras of community origin are also part of this initiative; and from tomorrow they will live a learning experience having traveled to different countries.
The High Commissioner against Child Poverty, Albert Arcarons, has reaffirmed the role of culture in development. “Talent and merit will save us in the end.” Likewise, the president of Acción por la Música, María Guerrero Sanz, has emphasized that the challenge of the activities will be the integration of the artists and the public. Based on the “System,” an instructional method invented in Venezuela, the program boosts young people’s self-esteem and cognitive development, said Seyo president Marshall Marcus.
Tomorrow at 7 pm there will be a lecture on music and cultural rights in the Casa de Vacas Auditorium, Retiro Park. On July 13 at 8 p.m., the young people will perform in the Plaza de Colón in collaboration with the network of Madrid’s municipal music and dance schools and other invited orchestras. To end the “tour”, the Action for Music concert will take place at the National Auditorium on July 14, led by teachers Etienne Abelin, Ron Davis Alvarez, Lara Diloy and Jhoanna Sierralta.
