Affleck and Damon are working on a script about Nike and Michael Jordan

Date:

Those responsible for the script of ‘Good Will Hunting’ are co-writing and will star in this story, according to ‘The Hollywood Reporter’

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, who co-wrote the screenplay for “Good Will Hunting” (for which they won an Oscar), in which they also co-starred under the direction of Gus Van Sant, and “The Last Showdown,” directed by Ridley Scott, with a proof of friendship against everything, have sat down to write a new script with four hands. And not just any one, but a story about Nike and Michael Jordan who will also star.

It was the magazine “The Hollywood Reporter” that echoed the news, which will develop one of the most important episodes in the history of the company Nike, when in the mid-1980s the sports equipment company associated with Michael Jordan, the greatest basketball star in the world.

The as-yet-untitled film is co-produced by Amazon Studios and Skydance Sports, and may be directed by Affleck himself as he writes, stars and produces. With titles such as “The Town” or “Argo”, Affleck has developed a not inconsiderable career as a director, parallel to his own as an interpreter. Here his friend Damon will also act as co-star and co-producer. The partnership has already been confirmed by someone who knows Jordan well, such as Jon Weinbach.

Weinbach is the president of Skydance Sports. This project is the first film developed by this subsidiary of Skydance Productions after the producer was behind ‘The Last Dance’, a critically acclaimed documentary about Jordan’s career. In earlier stages of the project, the film was known as “Air Jordan” and had a finished script, which Affleck and Damon apparently ruled out altogether. In the film, Damon plays Sonny Vacarro, a former Nike executive who was once largely responsible for Michael Jordan’s precious signing. Affleck, for his part, becomes Phil Knight, co-founder of Nike.

It is certain that the film will capture Vacarro’s efforts so that Jordan would be a Nike partner and wear their products on the field, meeting partners, friends and family members who are as coy as the athlete’s mother. In it, as it turned out, Jordan will never appear, assuming a mythical presence on which the whole plot hangs.

Affleck and Damon’s willingness to undertake this project is an unbeatable letter of introduction, although it is inevitable to associate its genesis with the current success of ‘Time of Victory’ on the HBO Max platform, a series based on an episode presenting Nike’s battle for the Los Angeles Lakers Showtime lineup.
