NI’s fake tanning brands have released a statement about a new EU regulation affecting dark tanning products.
An EU directive, which also applies to Northern Ireland and will take effect in April, restricts the use of dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a skin-tightening dye, to a maximum of 10% per bottle of tanners.
This means that many “too or too dark” shades can no longer be sold in the EU unless the formula is changed: Dungannon-based sister brands Bellamianta and Iconic Bronze are issuing product updates.
Changes in other light shades of a fake tan should not be affected because they usually contain much less than 10% DHA.
A spokesperson for the Cosmetics, Toiletry and Perfumery Association said the requirements apply to ROI and the rest of the European Union, along with products marketed in Northern Ireland.
“For GB, the bodies responsible for cosmetic legislation are developing appropriate processes for managing ingredients and are considering DHA accordingly,” they added.
Some brands that have already worked without DHA will not be affected.
An official EU statement reads: “The owners of all brands of products containing DHA (dihydroxyacetone) adjust their formulations to ensure they do not exceed a maximum of 10% from April of the year.”
Bellamianta and Iconic Bronze say they’ve researched and modified their range over the past 18 months to include “fresh and safe” ingredients, adding that beauty lovers shouldn’t be afraid to lose their deep and dark shades.
They say the “old” versions of both brands will remain available until April 2022, before stock runs out, with the newly redesigned products offered online and on shelves after that date.
Linda Stenson, Brand Owner and Founder of Co Tyrone, said: “At Bellamianta & Iconic Bronze, we have taken this change of regulations as a springboard for both brands to move on to our next passion project and what we have done over the years – skincare.
“Bellamyanta’s skincare has been and will continue to be at the forefront of our products. All of our products are vegan, cruelty-free, PETA certified, alcohol-free, and all other GMOs, sulfates, and toxins.”
