Lisburn’s makeup artist who built the self-confidence to follow her dreams

Date:

Drew wants to empower other women

A Lisburn woman who created her own makeup brand before the pandemic hit, is starting to realize her dreams.

Drew Clark, 25, started working as a makeup artist 6 years ago as an artist, but said he was horrified about the job.

He decided to take the leap with the January 2019 launch of DW Cosmetics, something he says as a teenager he would never have imagined.

One mum said she was very calm but decided to change and “take a risk.”

Drew now has a message for young people that they can do whatever they want if it comes to their mind.

She told Be, “I’ve always been interested in makeup and when I started…I realized that a makeup kit wasn’t what I wanted. Every time I tried to put makeup on people, I realized it was nothing. What I liked. When I was using foundation, bronzer, I always had a problem.

I always remember coming home with my mom and wife and saying, “I don’t like these products, they are really hard to sell.” I didn’t have a passion for it because I didn’t like anything.

“I thought, What can I do to help the makeup industry?” As a makeup artist, you know the ins and outs of skincare products and what’s required.

The 25-year-old says she never thought it would be her life

“One day I was doing makeup for a girl and she said to me, ‘Why don’t you go out with your makeup line? I thought: What a dream! I could never… “I started thinking, maybe I can… It all started from here.”

Drew, who is doing all the work on her own and starting her second job, says it can be stressful for everything to go smoothly with the new mom.

The makeup artist says he’s 100 percent happy he made the leap to start his own business, adding that it’s so cool to have something of your name on it, “Make the dream come true.”

“Whoever was from Lisburn, growing up in Drumor and Banbridge, I didn’t know the entire influencer world. I think it’s also very saturated and you don’t know who to trust when they bring your products either. So you have a lot of hits and I miss it.”

As a teenager, Drew says he would never have imagined he could get what he had, adding that his life took a complete turn.

I was studying in a country school, I was mute until the fifth year. I decided to change, took a risk and went and went to a new school because I was. I felt like I wasn’t going anywhere in school, I was really calm.

“I ran, I don’t know anyone… and I thought ‘Oh my God, what should I do?'” “

“I needed to hear what other people thought of me and I was just thinking, ‘You know what, that’s what I want to do. “

Drew has a message for young people that influences what others think of them.

“This other person will never walk in your shoes. Do it. If you hold back because of what the other person thinks of you, that person will go on with their life and frame the same situation because you were so afraid.”

“I think fear is what holds everyone back, but if we could come up with the idea that if someone believed X and Y and Z, they would think anyway, whether you do it or not, they would have to kind of do just what is The best for them. And be happier to live with what someone tells you, or what someone thinks is best for you.

“If you really want something and you have all the ideas going forward… I’m from Northern Ireland – I’ve looked at the big brands like BPerfect and all the brands that have millions of followers – I never knew they were here until I spoke. Half of them.. . [I was like] ‘How did you work?’ “

It was important to Drew that he was able to create products that were not tested on animals.

He added, “Years ago I knew I wanted to do it, but I was just trying to find the time to do it, I needed to develop my Instagram, start YouTube, and I had to do everything because if there was no audience, they wouldn’t buy it.” Sun, it’s going to take a long time. It took, but here we are.

“I knew in that moment that I didn’t want to work there anymore, I needed him.

“I was just thinking, What did I grow up with?” This is a risk in the sense that if he doesn’t make a profit and put all my money in it I will lose a lot, but for now I wanted to use it as I wanted. It worked very badly. “I was very excited about spreading the brand to empower people.”

The highlight of his career, Drew says, is hosting a body-positive event, along with a makeup demo, believing he won’t be able to sell 70 tickets.

All sold out in 45 minutes, the makeup artist said he couldn’t work today.

“It was just surreal,” Drew said.

She added how important it is to empower other women in the industry.

“I was working on a makeup background and working with a lot of other women. One thing I noticed was that I felt stupid at work, I didn’t feel good, I didn’t feel good. The women I worked with.

“The thing I’ve experienced in my life is I know how awful I felt, so the new thing now is, just give people a surprise. It’s literally free, you can make someone’s day more beautiful.”

“My attitude to both my operations is to allow people to feel strong, confident, and satisfied.
