A hairdresser in Northern Ireland has been warned after noticing an “increase” of clients experiencing “new allergic reactions” to hair dyes.

Color specialist Timothy David, owner of a studio in west London, said he had “certainly seen an increase in patch test sensitivity” with clients who had been using the same colors for years and also had the coronavirus.

Experts are currently investigating whether the new reactions are related to Covid.

Speaking to BBC 5 Live, he said: “It’s just a shock…it’s a red lump, usually showing up as a red swollen lump behind the ear or on the arm, itching, redness.

“I’ve been doing my hair every four weeks…and in December I also had my hair cut and wanted to change the color before going back to the salon again.

“I usually apply paint to my scalp and noticed this burning, itching and general discomfort and got rid of it instantly, I knew it was an allergy and I was shocked, I couldn’t believe it.

“Then I heard about an increase in people with allergies after Covid, but I am forcing all clients to take a color-correction test.

“Even those who have waited for color to return for more than six weeks, I’m sure will come early for a patch test.”

The Belfast man urges other beauty salons not to take any chances and to make sure their clients are checked 48 hours in advance.

“By law, in any case, every customer must be tested before any chemicals are used and this should be considered mandatory,” he added.

The show also included Gemma Mitchell of Auschwitz, who suffered burns from a hair dye test after Covid got her earlier this year.

He told the show: “Honestly, it was pretty scary. I had Covid in January, and it wasn’t a very good time, but I recovered after a few months.

“Salons have reopened, and my hairstylists, where they are over 10 years old, have put in place a policy that you must have 48 hours before color correction.

“I had never reacted to a patch test before, so I followed it and in a million years I didn’t think I would get the reaction I got.

“The next day, the back of my ear started to get intense redness, intense itching, and soon it became apparent that he had removed the layers of skin and layers behind my ear.

“Very painful, but very scary… Wouldn’t it get worse?”

He added, “It’s a pity that if he hadn’t made this patch test mandatory, what could have happened to me?”

According to the BBC, scientists at Imperial College London are now studying how this disease can raise the level of our immune system.

NHBF is the UK’s largest trade association for owners of hairdressers, barbershops and beauty salons, and has told companies: “You’ll need to be extra vigilant when clients request hair coloring service once your salon or barber returns to work after lockdown.

This also applies to beauty salons that provide services such as dyeing eyebrows and eyelashes.

“Make sure you and your staff understand that additional allergy testing may be required prior to the meeting.”

He added, “It is important to have a post-ban consultation with your client. Even if your client has had an alert test in the past six months, they will need another test if they have used any hair coloring product when they are closed at home.”
