Years ago, a major publisher asked me to write in favor of smoking. I said no, but not because I was against smoking. And it was before the indoor bans. The first time I went to Arlington Cemetery, I was surprised that there was no smoking. I’m telling you, you could still smoke in restaurants in the US I think it was because of possible cigarette butts on the floor or out of respect, I don’t know.
Now Catalonia is going to ban smoking on restaurant terraces and at bus stops, ahead of a state law in this regard that has been on the table for a year. The bus stops are easy, you get out of the shelter. But the terraces? I’m starting to understand those wackos from “The Leftovers,” the Guilty Remnant, who smoke non-stop. Cigarettes are a statement of faith. They feel that there is no future and do not have to worry about their health. Luis Enrique already says: the future does not exist.
