What would new elections do better?

Date:

Following the revelations by former ÖVP insider Thomas Schmid, the opposition’s call for new elections is getting louder. Yes, the current government’s approval is in the basement. But new elections wouldn’t automatically make everything better…

For as appealing as the thought may be to “go on” in parliament and give one or the other a good reminder of their atrocities: anyone who believes that new elections would put an end to all political bad habits and the parties encourages them to think for themselves, probably believes so for the Christ child.

In new elections only the next would follow
Probably only the following would follow. When Thomas Schmid says that the “Beinschab-Tool” was invented by the SPÖ, it gives a glimpse into a system that persisted for decades with chasing, shenanigans and the like. Apparently, behind the scenes politics works very differently than one would like to convey to trusting voters. That’s pretty awful for some people.

Right now only red and blue would work
So new elections would not solve the problem. On the contrary: in times of war, inflation and Corona we need security, stability and decisiveness. A new election campaign would only paralyze us for months, the country would be busy with poster campaigns and not political issues. And the result? The question is whether so much would change for the better. A stable majority would currently only be possible with red-blue. And that would be a pretty bold experiment.

Cleaning up, consequences, laws
Instead of roaring after new elections, it would finally be time to credibly clean up the political wrongdoing, draw personal consequences and enact laws that will protect us from egomaniacal politicians in the future. Never stick to chairs again! No more diving! And no more strategic bickering! The Austrian is grumpy enough already.

If you only think about yourself, take your hat off
Perhaps that is wishful thinking, but perhaps in these quiet days everyone in Parliament should take a few hours to reflect on why they have really become politicians and what they expect from their work. If you only think about your own progress, you should be honest and just take off your hat. That would save us Austrians valuable time and nerves. Please thank.
