In recent years, several studies have been published that warn of the decline in the intelligence quotient (IQ). If intelligence reached 30 points in the 20th century – what is known as the “Flynn effect” – it seems that this phenomenon has been reversed in recent decades and humanity’s IQ has entered recession – just like the economy. As shown by these scientific studies, such a decline should be attributed to environmental factors and lifestyles, and therefore would not have a genetic cause. Be that as it may, the fact that intelligence is declining seems irrefutable today, and not only by the evidence provided by scientists, but above all by proven daily experience. Anyone who pays the slightest attention to the political debate will be immediately struck by the vast intellectual poverty we suffer from. There are exceptions, of course – for brilliant minds have always existed amidst mediocrity and the armies of darkness – but, as they say, these only prove the rule. The interventions of many of our political representatives cause embarrassment, both for what they say and the way they say it. Decisions are made that go against all logic -here is the intervention project of the Junta de Andalucía for Doñana- and, far from being corrective, government managers are entrenched in absurd arguments that defy any survival of common sense. Suddenly democracy – the globalization of which was the main aspiration of the last century – has become a system that is disturbing and that must be gradually eroded. That freedom causes allergies is something that can only be explained from the exhaustion of reflective processes. It is clear that mediocrity breeds dissatisfaction with one’s own life, and that, when personal experiences are not enough, the most recurring temptation is to interfere with the affairs of others, to pour hatred, to judge, to prevent others from expressing their ideas. , live up to their love. , their body the way they want. The drive for power increases as intelligence decreases. And from the manifest imbalance between the first and the second, authoritarianism arises. The demonstration of nostalgia recently held by the supporters of José Antonio Primo de Rivera after the exhumation of his remains in the Valley of the Fallen is proof of the extent to which democracy hinders the “intellectually shrunken.” Of course, those who raise their arms to update the fascist salute are the performers of speeches launched from the political sphere. And here – how could it be otherwise – there is no party that glorifies Francoism and its environs that Vox does not enthusiastically join. One might object to this theory of declining intelligence that, as far as the space of politics is concerned, this era has been very unfortunate and has brought together the worst of every house. But the problem is that these symptoms of intellectual starvation are not confined to a political class that feeds on its stupidity as if it were an island. No: the problem is bigger and affects the whole of society. Because the actions of our representatives do not lead to a state of indignation on the part of the bourgeoisie, but rather to applause and approval. Only a society whose IQ is on a downward curve could reduce its level of demand to such embarrassing levels that certain situations are possible. Let us recall again, and as a paradigmatic example of this “compromise of mediocrity”, the pandemic of defectors suffered by the region of Murcia during the last legislature. In any minimally living and reflective society, such a spectacle and apotheosis of democracy’s mediocrity and corruption would have met with widespread condemnation and social punishment. On the contrary, the defectors have become heroes and warriors for many citizens who fight against the social-communist hordes. That is not even a blind adherence to an ideology, but a resounding absence of reflection and therefore of intelligence. Whoever supports defectors is an accomplice to murder – that of the intellect. And unfortunately in this region there are many who have blood on their hands. For many, the defectors have become heroes and warriors battling the social-communist hordes. The evil of declining intelligence runs right through the social fabric. The superficiality of the speeches used – whether in conventions, meetings and town halls or in bars – is so violent that it explodes in sensitivity like an atomic bomb. Mediocrity is a much more deadly pandemic than any other pandemic we’ve experienced: it’s denial, totalitarian, violent, undemocratic, selfish, narrow-minded, brutal. The consequences it brings are only negative and have global effects. It’s not just a matter of lack of culture, but how our lives are fatally affected by their decisions.
