According to a new study, 51% of migrants surveyed think moving to Vienna is too much for them. That sounds absurd at first glance, but it should give us something to think about. If immigration becomes too much even for immigrants, we have a real integration problem!
Because if people with a migration background also notice that the relationship between immigration and the preservation of our cityscape is no longer correct, then things will get serious. The coming together of different cultures already presents us with an enormous challenge. How is that supposed to work if there are more to come?
Integration resources are limited
Even the most social romantic must realize that this can’t work out in the long run. Instead of new immigration, we need sensible measures to integrate those already living with us! It also takes a dose of realism to see how much migration a city can tolerate. After all, the resources to integrate new residents are limited!
Unpleasant numbers
The result should not be that we shrug our shoulders and accept that more than 50% of students do not speak German as their native language. It should open our eyes when almost 74% of Austrian-Turks voted out autocrat Erdogan from the warm nest in Austria – much more than in Turkey itself! And also that Vienna’s police chief warns that more than 50% of crimes are committed by migrants should be shocking…

But it doesn’t. After all, anyone looking for workable ideas for the integration of people who do not want to integrate will be disappointed. The standard answer “Vienna is the most livable city for a reason” no one hears anymore! Of course this is a sensitive subject that requires tact, but not talking about it can’t be an option!
Where life goes well
Of course, all this does not mean that you need to paint black. This city thrives on diversity and coexistence is largely going well, especially in the Grätzel. The study participants feel the same way. However, that doesn’t mean politicians can sit back and twiddle their thumbs. There’s still a long way to go.
