Farmer about cow attack – ‘People have forgotten how to treat animals’

Date:

On the alpine pastures of Salzburg, there are always clashes between hikers and cows because the animals feel disturbed. Farmers explain the correct behavior on the alp.

When people and animals meet during the hiking season, it doesn’t always go smoothly. “Cows are just as sensitive as we humans are,” says farmer Markus Rainer, who takes care of 70 cattle in Rauris.

Whoever crosses a meadow should behave calmly, not feed the animals and give the herd a spacious place to lie – and not walk right through it. Cows see dogs as a threat – especially if they run and bark uncontrollably. That’s why in the pasture area: on a leash!

Out of respect for the animals, a great distance must be kept and the entire herd must always be observed. “I avoid contact on the pasture, I avoid cows,” says farmer Ernst Hetz. His cows in Puch are particularly sensitive and feel disturbed more easily when the calves are nearby. A mother cow sees people or dogs as strangers. If she is afraid or senses danger, this is passed on to the herd. She can hardly be calmed down.

If a cow shows signs of distress – eyes fixed, ears pointed forward, cow starts to run – running away is not a good idea. “The cows run after them,” says Rainer. “You’re faster than you think.” Better to make yourself heard loudly and impress the cow. Rainer appeals to walkers’ reason: many have forgotten how to handle farm animals. In the event of an attack, the farmer and the injured party are equally liable if a sign points to the animals in the walking area.
