All I know is that Don Ignacio Sánchez Galán earns in a day what I earn in a year and that, I don’t have to rub it in, makes me feel like a fool.
Actually, I don’t really know what Sánchez Galán does. I assume he will be going from office to office with a big phalanx of hostesses, executives and secretaries, but I don’t know what decisions he makes, what strategies he decides, how he got up there, what restaurants he eats at, or he has ever picked up a book from the library or if you go to the movies a lot. All I know is that Don Ignacio Sánchez Galán earns in a day what I earn in a year and that, I don’t have to rub it in, makes me feel like a fool.
I won’t say this nonsense of mine surprises me. It’s something I’ve suspected for a long time and nothing happens. If you assume that you are stupid, life suddenly becomes simple. Pretending to be intelligent and civilized is exhausting: you have to read the Belarusian Nobel Prize winners, you have to watch Iranian movies in their original version, you have to listen tirelessly to opera, you have to know how to use an iron, you have to discover distant nuances of vanilla in every glass of red wine. Folly, on the other hand, deprives one and thus can devote itself without remorse to the only cardinal sin that is really worth it: laziness. Ever since Mr Sánchez Galán called me a fool, I also feel chosen by someone important. I read that he apologized later, but I didn’t need to, Don Ignacio. I hadn’t experienced this wave of self-esteem since one day Stoitchkov, the football player, turned to me, yelled at him in the stands, and gave me a comb.
However, as a fool in the deep and irrevocable way I am, I have to say I don’t think it’s very smart for a businessman to suddenly ignore three million customers, but what do I know, I don’t even have half an MBA.
