Donald Trump was convicted of financial fraud. He is also accused of conspiracy, election manipulation and embezzlement of classified government documents. At the same time, Trump will almost certainly run for president in 2024 as his Republican Party’s candidate. How does this all come together?
1. Legally everything is clear. There is nothing in the U.S. Constitution or in any law of the land that says a presidential candidate cannot be a presidential candidate just because he is accused or even found guilty in court cases. Theoretically, it would even be possible that Trump could be elected, that courts could convict him before or after the election, and that he could rule as president from prison. Because he is not allowed to pardon himself in all cases.
