Our government is celebrating the halving of the number of asylum seekers. This is of course a decoration. Because what sounds good is still way too high. The comparison year used, 2022, even surpassed the previous record of 2015.
Austria’s population has grown by more than one million since 2000 due to immigration. Between 2015 and 2023 alone, there were 407,655 asylum seekers – two-thirds more than Austrian citizens in Graz. The federal government recently enthusiastically announced that in 2023 – half of 2022 – there were “only” 58,686 asylum applications. This is of course an embellishment: the comparison year 2022 had a particularly high immigration level. Despite all the enthusiasm, the figures from 2023 show that the number of applications even exceeded the number of inhabitants of Wiener Neustadt.
