A column from ‘Krone’ sports director Peter Moizi:
The tension increases, a tingling feeling occurs in the stomach area. Anticipation for the European Championship in Germany is growing every day. Austria says goodbye to the fans in a dignified setting on Tuesday. More than 30,000 tickets have been sold and the beer gardens in the Prater are fully booked.
The international match against Serbia this summer should be the start of an unforgettable football fairytale. Red-White-Red wants to surpass itself at the European Championships within two years; Ralf Rangnick has vaccinated his team with a special winning gene.
The fans look back with pride on many highlights from the German era:
- On November 21, 2022, Austria won 2-0 against European champions Italy – the first victory over the Squadra Azzurra in 62 (!) years. Legendary.
- Exactly one year later, a 2-0 win against Germany followed.
- 19 points from eight games in European Championship qualifying – second place for Austria!
- In the last match, Turkey was sent off 6-1.
Matches, results and magical moments that make Austria dream of further triumphs. Rangnick conjures solutions out of a hat, acts positively and flexes his muscles.
“Austria can do anything at this European Championship,” he announced several times euphorically. These are not empty promises or empty words. Because a complete professional like Rangnick would never say something like that if he wasn’t 100 percent convinced of the potential of this team.
