About 40 kg of suspected cannabis seized

A 32-year-old US citizen has been charged with attempted drug smuggling at Belfast Airport.

Akindunde Akindvand of Woodland Hills, California was stopped by DAERA port inspectors on Monday, March 28, after leaving London for a trip.

National Crime Agency officials said he went from Heathrow through San Francisco.

Inspectors alerted the Border Patrol and the NCA after finding suspicious drug packages in the checked bags.

About 40 kilograms were recovered, at an estimated cost of 320,000.00.

After being questioned by NCA officers, Akinvande was charged with possession of Class B drugs, willful possession of a supply, and attempting to import Class B drugs.

He was remanded in pretrial detention pending a hearing in the same court on April 27 at a Laganside Magistrate’s hearing on Wednesday, March 30.

“By working with partners, we are committed to doing everything we can to stop the supply of illegal drugs in Northern Ireland and prevent organized crime,” said David Cunningham, NCA Belfast Leader.
