It is expected to be cold, partly bitterly cold, in large parts of Austria in the coming days. That means in the truest sense of the word: dress warmly!
In a figurative sense, the ÖVP must dress warmly – and not just in winter.
That became crystal clear in Herbert Kickl’s message on Tuesday: he wants to form a government quickly – and he certainly does not want to make it easy for his junior partner.
Kickl made it clear who brought Austria into its current dire situation: the previous government led by the ÖVP. He spoke of “a waste of money and trust”, of “hitting the wall”, of “deadly political sins”, and of the fact that “after the decline of recent years” a “massive reconstruction” was now necessary. He, Kickl, had been warned by many whether this ÖVP could be trusted at all – they wanted to let the Blues slip.
And Kickl also did not forget to point out that there must be a clear sense of who won the election.
No, the FPÖ and ÖVP are light years away from a coalition love marriage, and also from a partnership of equals. Kickl has made it clear who will be in charge in this relationship. This won’t be fun for the turquoise blacks.
Of course, you don’t have to feel too sorry for the ÖVP. She maneuvered herself into this fatal negotiating position – with the active ‘help’ of the Federal President.
