Apparently a successor has been found for the outgoing Chancellor Karl Nehammer. Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, an old acquaintance, will move to Ballhausplatz. He is expected to take over until a new government is formed.
According to reports, the previous foreign minister had the upper hand in the race against constitutional minister Karoline Edtstadler. An official confirmation from Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen is expected later on Wednesday.
Schallenberg probably got the contract because he already knows the office: he took over as Chancellor on October 11, 2021 (after Sebastian Kurz resigned) and then resigned on December 2 – after Kurz also resigned as ÖVP chairman – for Karl Nehammer , who was appointed ÖVP leader and chancellor the next day.
Outgoing Chancellor Nehammer will leave office on Friday. The transfer has already taken place within the party; the previous general secretary of the ÖVP, Christian Stocker, was appointed acting ÖVP chairman on Sunday. He has announced a press statement about the current developments at 2 p.m.
The Chancellor wants to remain silent in the future
Nehammer recently emphasized in his podcast that his goal was to prevent Kickl from becoming chancellor. “Because I have always had the belief and attitude that his view of office, the way he lives politically, is not good for our country.” He was unable to do this during the coalition negotiations, for “many reasons”. “But I think it’s especially important, when that happens, to show people, to continue to show, that what I said before will stick afterwards.”
He does not want to give any more interviews in the future. He finds it “unnecessary” to comment from the side “as a so-called balcony muppet”. “I will do everything I can to avoid becoming like this.”
