Applications announced – Kickl wants a referendum on sanctions against Russia

Date:

After Upper Austrian governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) questioned sanctions against Russia in the “Krone”, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl is now calling for a referendum on the matter. He welcomes and supports the “votes of economic reason” within the People’s Party, Kickl said, who announced corresponding parliamentary motions on Saturday.

“These sanctions have no effect on the war, but they are fueling inflation and a knee-jerk to the domestic economy. The ÖVP now seems to have noticed,” Kickl said. In opinion polls, the majority of Austrians would already be in favor of an end to these sanctions, according to the FPÖ leader.

Referendum as soon as possible
“We have no time to lose. The heating season is rapidly approaching. Such a referendum must take place as soon as possible. Here too we are a partner for the reasonable forces, for whom the maintenance of prosperity in our own country is paramount.” Kickl said in a Saturday broadcast.

Kickl is reminiscent of Corona
The Liberal club chairman thinks of Corona when it comes to the issue of sanctions against Russia: “Here too, the government talked people into things for two years that were not right before they finally switched to the FPÖ line. However, in the case of the sanctions, we no longer have two years, but a maximum of two months. If the sanctions, this shot in the knee, are not ended, the coming winter threatens to become very uncomfortable for many people.”

The ÖVP governor of Upper Austria, Stelzer, said Friday in the “Krone” summer interview that the correctness of the sanctions against Russia should be checked. Tyrol’s new ÖVP boss Anton Mattle is on Stelzer’s side, with both the NEOS and the Greens seeing the question as a “serious mistake”.
