As of today, April 6, Austria has reached individual World Overshoot Day. This means that from now on more resources will be used than the earth can replenish in a year. A reconsideration is therefore essential, said Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens).
“Only four months left this year, Austria is one of the few countries in the world that has already reached the so-called Country Earth Overshoot Day. The most recent developments in particular show us how dependent we are on certain fossil raw materials and how important it is to guarantee the availability of raw materials at the same time,” said the Minister of Climate Protection. The disrupted supply chains and the fact that less raw materials are available are currently noticeable as a result of the war in Ukraine.
Materials should be used in a more targeted way and products should be used for as long as possible. According to Gewessler, getting out of the throw-away society is the order of the day.
World Day in July
Austria leads the way on World Exhaustion Day. Even further ahead are Luxembourg (February 14), Canada and the US (March 13 each). The last date this time is Jamaica, December 20. Like last year, the global World Overstock Day could take place at the end of July. Experts use a method to calculate when the average theoretical space requirement of humans, for example for urbanization, food cultivation and industrial production, will exceed the buffer capacity of the earth.
