Waiting for law – climate protection: “Government disoriented”

Date:

Climate Protection Act. A hot topic. Wednesday marks 600 days since a new law was announced — the old one, which set annual greenhouse gas budgets, expired in 2020. Criticism of the government is growing.

Turquoise Green wants to invest heavily in sustainable energy and has many plans. However, concrete implementation is not yet in sight. There is a lack of legal regulations. Although this is entrenched in the government program, critics say. Reinhard Steurer of BOKU Vienna complained on Monday on Ö1 that the ÖVP in particular acted economically oriented and irresponsibly in the field of climate. Even though rising energy costs seem to be the biggest problem at the moment, the most important should not be neglected.

“Neither law nor legal climate targets”
A climate protection law is indispensable, it establishes a necessary emission regulation. That is what the opposition, especially the SPÖ, says, given the upcoming rather unpleasant round number. Climate protection spokeswoman Julia Herr says of the “Krone”: “For 600 days, the federal government has been wandering with no direction when it comes to climate protection, there is no law or statutory climate targets.”

Longing for the “healthy forest”
Climate researchers say global warming must be halved by 2030 to meet ambitious targets for the future. The gentleman sees it this way: “The ÖVP is blocked, and the Greens are discouraged and lacking in ambition.” The SPÖ politician wants reforestation and a “healthy forest” that can absorb a lot of CO2. “Austria is the only country in the EU that does not have a legal climate target.”
