According to EH Bildu’s spokeswoman in Congress, cutting sales tax is a decision that needs to be made “carefully,” and if the price of food rises, “they need to be capped.” The proposal from the government of Spain “could be a path”.

Mertxe Aizpuruaspokesman for EH Bildu in the Congress of Deputies, in an interview in Euskadi Irratia, has defended the need to take measures to influence basic food prices.
As he explained, EH Bildu is generally not in favor of reducing VAT, but food prices “affect everyone” and “it is true that we need something in basic food“If food prices are going up and up, you have to put a cap on it,” he said.
In this sense, he believed that what had been proposed by the government of Spain “may be a path”. “We don’t see it bad as they suggest. Then you have to see it. Decisions such as reducing VAT should be taken with caution,” he added.
In addition, “it would be necessary to intervene” in the distribution chain, where most price increases take place. Aizpurua explains that only provisional measures are being taken, although the problem is “structural”. In this sense, he has argued that, like banks and large energy companies, taxes should also be levied on large distribution companies.
According to Aizpurua, it is “logical” that the general rebate of 0.20 euros for fuels is only maintained for a few sectors, because the general rebate has been “misused”. “The decision would be different if prices remained this high,” he added.
In any case, Aizpurua only “superficially” knows the measures that the government has to present, because he has not previously negotiated them with EH Bildu.
Need to agree on the right to decide in Euskal Herria
Asked about the PNV’s proposal to amend the constitution to include the right to decide, Aizpurua stressed that EH Bildu is not against it, but that it “opens a path that goes nowhere”. “That will not work out, everyone knows it, the PNV and Junts know it.” For this reason, from Euskal Herria “we must take something agreed upon, and not like this.”
In this sense, Aizpurua shares Pere Aragonés’ proposal for Catalonia and wants Euskal Herria to follow the same path. Catalonia and Euskal Herria “we should propose something like a front to the state, because it’s not our problem, it’s a problem that Spain has”.
