French President Emmanuel Macron visits Greenland on Sunday in a demonstrative act of solidarity in the light of US President Donald Trump.
His visit should prevent the area from being “looted”, Macron said before his departure. He is the first foreign head of state to come to Greenland since the ‘owning’ threats of Trump.
Invited by Greenland and Denmark
The head of state follows the invitations of the Prime Minister of Greenland and Denmark. “Greenland is a European territory and it is normal for Europe and France to show its interest in particular,” said Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot the broadcaster RTL on Sunday.
Greenland is a self -managed part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The island has the right to explain its independence. Both the Greenland and the Danish government have stated that the island is not for sale and only the Groenlanders could decide on their future.
Trump explained that he wanted the United States to take over the island in the North Pole area, which is rich, strategically conveniently located. Trump has not excluded the use of violence. His vice president JD Vance visited an American military base on the island in March.
“Traveling is a signal in itself”
“France has supported us since the first statements (Trumps). This support is both necessary and satisfactory,” said Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen a few days ago. When asked if Macron will send a message to the United States during his visit, a consultant Macron said: “The trip is a signal itself.”
Denmark is an EU member, but his former Greenland colony is not part of the Union. The French adviser said the visit would be an opportunity to discuss how the Association Partnership or Greenland could receive a “new dimension” with the EU.
