98 years of football in old Condomina

Date:

Inaugurated on December 25, 1924, it was the home of Real Murcia until 2006 and the scene of hundreds of duels that made history.

It was not a design stadium, but it roared and made the visitors uncomfortable. This has been recognized by world-class footballers who have stepped onto it for decades as it was inaugurated on December 25, 1924, a date which marked last Sunday’s 98th anniversary. The opening game was a Real Murcia-Martinenc game that ended with a 3-1 local victory and with a first official goal from the grana Magdaleno Ariño.

The entity from Granada played 82 years in this hall which, when it was inaugurated, and thanks to its 108 meters long and 68 meters wide, became for a time the largest in Spain. In 1961, it inaugurated its lighting domes and on October 15, 1978, its new preferred grandstand with a visor from the 1980-81 academic year.

In addition to the opening match, there are other matches that, according to the historian Juan Antonio Garre, will forever remain in the collective memory of the Grana fans. Like the one on November 24, 1973 in which Cruijff visited La Condomina with Barcelona and who registered the best access to the hall until then.

On January 25, 1981, on the occasion of the visit of Real Madrid, the Murcian Stadium brought together more than 25,000 fans, not counting the hundreds who benefited from the construction of the adjacent buildings to Camacho, Del Bosque, Stielike, Juanito, among others or Santillana. The box office, of 22 million pesetas, was a record for a Real Murcia team taking a point from the whites.

La Condomina also saw promotions to the First Division at close range, such as the one on April 21, 1963 which, like that of the 2002–03 campaign, which, with Acciari’s goal, featured the Levante team.

Other teams from Murcia also achieved some of their promotions in La Condomina. Like Quique Pina’s Ciudad de Murcia, who knocked Castellón out in front of a full field on June 29, 2003 and got a place in the Second Division thanks to two goals from Pepe Aguilar and one from Manolo Sanlúcar, who coached Granada a few year ago. UCAM, although they failed at home, also made it to professional football in 2016 after beating Castilla in a tie they led at La Condomina and sealed in Madrid.

But if there was a historic audience in La Condomina, it was on March 23, 1983. That night, and on the occasion of the qualifying match between Spain and France for the Los Angeles Olympic Games 84, the fans attacked even the bands and the backs within. of the field of play and the clash, which was postponed for an hour, was about to be abandoned, although the worst, apart from the bad image, was the 0-1 final.
