Sees change of heart – Raab expects less commitment to Ukrainians

Date:

Recently, an emotional debate has also erupted in Austria over the EU’s sanctions policy against Russia over the attack on Ukraine. More and more people want an end to the sanctions – currently more than 40 percent believe the sanctions are not having the right effect on Russia’s politics and economy. Apart from this debate, Integration Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) also sees signs of declining solidarity with Ukrainian refugees in Austria.

As the department head explained during a panel discussion in the context of the current Forum Alpbach, it should not be forgotten that in addition to the 80,000 displaced persons from the war zone, about 40,000 refugees from other countries came to Austria in the first half of the year. year. All in all, that’s more than in 2015, when there was a crisis – a “huge challenge, also for the Austrians” if you include the pandemic.

Displaced persons and housing market
Although Thomas Liebig of the OECD does not see a real mood swing yet, he does see signs in that direction. If the displaced persons from their temporary housing enter the housing market within a few months and possibly another large group of displaced persons came to Austria, the situation could change.

Raab said she sees and expects a turnaround. This is kind of a normal process. When you open the door to displaced persons, it is usually only for a certain period of time. The state must therefore create the right structures to ensure integration.
