Tomorrow, Friday, the new ORF law will be adopted. From 2024 there should be less text on the ‘Blue Page’ – will that work?
After a disturbance in the Bundesrat, which caused a delay, the new ORF law is believed to have been passed from tomorrow, Friday. The law, which will enter into force in January 2024, not only regulates the new mandatory contribution for everyone. Limitations are also attached to the ORF’s online presence: in the future, the public broadcaster may place a maximum of 350 text messages per week on its website in order to prevent distortion of competition with private media. Because their news pages have to do without fee income.
According to the law, the regulation only applies to the overview page orf.at, the so-called “Blue Page”. This wording should provide some loopholes for the media giant. In addition, separate state-level summary reporting is permitted and is not counted among the 350 reports.
In addition, additional pages such as ORF Topos or ORF Religion could also be cheated by the new rule – after all, they are not called under orf.at, but under topos.orf.at or religion.orf.at. Text avalanches are spreading there, which are clearly newspaper-like – on January 1, you’ll see if these pages will also adhere to the message barrier.
