Haslauer on track for Vienna – ‘Would mean kneeling to Putin’

Date:

Russia invaded Ukraine six months ago. Salzburg Governor Wilfried Haslauer insists on EU sanctions. But there are also different voices.

FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl campaigned for “understanding Russia” during the ORF summer talks on Monday evening. On February 24, exactly six months ago, the nuclear superpower launched a war of aggression against Ukraine. Since then, the EU has punished the aggressor with various packages of sanctions.

In addition to Kickl, the ÖVP bosses in Tyrol (Mattle) and Upper Austria (Stelzer) have recently called for questioning the sense of the measures.

In any case, the Salzburg government supports the Austrian orientation: “If we relax sanctions, it would mean kneeling before Putin. Then the law of the strongest would apply,” said ÖVP Governor Haslauer of the “Krone”.

“Don’t be blackmailed by the warmonger”
Even at NEOS, kneeling before Putin is out of the question: “We must not allow ourselves to be blackmailed by a warmonger,” says Andrea Klambauer. Addendum: “The sanctions are needed to finally get out of Austria’s dependence on Russia.”

Heinrich Schellhorn (Greens) says: “We clearly support the sanctions!” SPÖ man and Chamber of Commerce boss Peter Eder is convinced that “lifting sanctions would seriously damage Europe”. leave out populism”, and sees the mega profits of the oil companies as the main reason for inflation.

FPÖ is united against sanctions
But not everyone in Salzburg is a friend of the sanctions. Chamber of Commerce chairman Peter Buchmüller recently stated that a gas stop would lead to serious economic damage and tens of thousands of unemployed. “Corona wouldn’t mind!” Marlene Svazek of the FPÖ is also critical of the sanctions and calls for a referendum. “We want a quick way out of the sanctions,” Svazek said. The KPÖ Plus would follow a different course. According to Kay-Michael Dankl, sanctions should increasingly target Putin’s wealthy supporters.
