This time, seven candidates are running in the federal presidential election. However, there is no woman among them.
One thing is certain on Friday: The presidential election on October 9 will see seven names on the ballot. A record: in 1951 and 2016 there were six candidates. This time you can do without gender, there are no women.
The last lady in the race was 2016 independent Irmgard Griss (reached nearly 19 percent), former top judge and later politician Neos. She says: “It is shameful and unfortunate that there are no women to vote. More than half of the population is women.” She criticizes the ÖVP and SPÖ: “The interest of the office requires that every party claiming to be in power nominate someone. And wonders if that shouldn’t be a woman. It seems to have fallen out of time at this point.”
Some candidates are “very special”
The seven candidates are sometimes very special. It sheds an important light on the appreciation of the highest office in the state and politics in general. “Everyone has to ask themselves: what can I do for the country as president? What is my motivation?” It is also about social responsibility.
Yesterday, shoe manufacturer Heinrich Staudinger announced that he has reached the threshold of 6,000 votes as number seven. Other challengers to President Alexander Van der Bellen include Walter Rosenkranz (FPÖ), lawyer Tassilo Wallentin, Marco Pogo (musician and doctor), blogger Gerald Grosz and MFG chief Michael Brunner.
