Despite the staffing crisis, there is little recognition that nurses like Veronika Masin have worked hard. This has a negative impact on the pension. Since many such cases are lurking, the personnel representatives are putting up the barricades. Instead of many public pats on the back and lip service, politicians should finally appreciate and value the nursing professions more.
One third of all nurses will retire by 2030. The nursing assistant Veronika Masin, who works at the hospital Waidhofen an der Thaya, is also there. She had to “calculate the years”. For the hard worker’s pension with significantly lower deductions – 1.8 percent instead of 5.1 percent per year – you have to have worked hard for ten of the last 20 years. After a long time, the decision of the pension insurer came as a shock to the 54-year-old: only two of the 13 years were counted as hard work for the full-time employee.
“Won’t Make It”
“Our job is demanding, I won’t be able to do my job like this until I retire,” she says firmly. Her works councilor Franz Bauer also fully understands and supports her when it comes to the discriminatory method of lending. After the Chamber of Commerce was unable to help her, she hired a lawyer herself – experts are now being appointed by the Krems Labor Court.
85,000 signatures for citizens’ initiative
After the response of the Ministry of Health to the parliamentary citizens’ initiative “Attention Health” with 85,000 signatures (see facsimile), top union members Reinhard Waldhoer (GÖD) and Edgar Martin (younion) took to the barricades. Because the nursing staff often fall for the heavy worker scheme, because a minimum of 15 shifts per month must be performed. But that is almost impossible with a 12-hour service bike.
Retirement options for heavy workers already
Waldhör was therefore only recently with Minister Johannes Rauch. “At press conferences, nurses are slapped on the back, and when there really are improvements at stake, they get a slap in the face,” the union members raged. There are already options in the healthcare sector for the heavy worker pension and the ministry says succinctly that work is still being done.
