Politically unofficial – Tyrol: VP governor is not God-given

Date:

Walk walk walk! According to the latest, most recent survey, there can only be one motto for the Tyrolean VP. As reported, between August 29 and September 1, IMAD polled 600 Tyroleans on behalf of the “Tiroler Krone” – the VP here is only 25.3 percent. Now even the latest critics within the People’s Party should start ringing alarm bells. Also for those who want to become governor themselves.

What is meant are some gentlemen in the Economic and Employees’ Union. Because if you’re not running now and hoping Anton Mattle will be history after September 25 anyway, then it’s entirely possible that you’ll wake up on September 26 not only without Mattle, but also without government participation. It is not God-given that the ÖVP is the governor of Tyrol until the end of his days.

Gang in the opposition threatens
But if not everyone joins forces, there is a risk of a bitter transition to the opposition. Power and positions are then gone. And that for sure for a long time! But how the renowned political scientist Christian Traweger analyzed in Sunday’s “Krone”: “It’s not all over yet. With a well-run election campaign – with focused topics without mud fights – even the threesome is still within reach for the ÖVP!”

Tyroleans have a good opinion about Mattle
Back to our research. We also asked the opinion of the Tyrolean top candidates. Anton Mattle (VP) is still in the lead here. More than 50 percent have a good or very good opinion about him. Only three percent don’t have a good opinion about him, but 14 percent don’t think so at all. On the other side is FP chairman Markus Abwerzger.

Only 18 percent good opinion about Abwerzger
Only 18 percent – that is, his constituents – have a good or very good opinion of him. 32 percent have a bad opinion of him. “It certainly has to do with the fact that he’s starting to look more and more like his role model, Herbert Kickl. In his choice of words, he could even pass for a Tyrolean Kickl clone,” says an insider about the bad image values. Not least because of this, his chances of becoming governor of Tyrol are almost zero. “For that, FPÖ veteran Rudi Federspiel will be the first blue head of state,” says the FPÖ insider.

But as neither VP boss Anton Mattle nor SP boss Georg Dornauer are willing to forge a coalition with Abwerzger, after September 25 the Blues will likely do what they do best: opposition!
