Pre-Funeral Reception – President Van der Bellen Condolences to King Charles

After the death of Queen Elizabeth II Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen King Charles III. and personally offered my condolences to the king’s wife Camilla. At the state reception at Buckingham Palace, on the eve of the Queen’s state funeral, the Federal President exchanged views with the royal couple and other heads of state. Van der Bellen was previously at the public viewing. Numerous state and government leaders and crowned heads from around the world attended the reception.

Van der Bellen knows Charles personally from his visit to Vienna in 2017. The then heir apparent traveled to the federal capital with his wife Camilla in April 2017 for an official visit. According to the Presidential Chancellery, Van der Bellen spoke at the reception on Sunday with his German and Bulgarian counterparts Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Rumen Radew.

First test
For King Charles III. the reception at Buckingham Palace was more than just a meeting with top international politicians. It was also a test for the 73-year-old. As king, he first met representatives of countries where he is head of state. Since the death of Queen Elizabeth, several states have tried to become a republic. The Prime Ministers of Antigua and Barbuda want to hold a referendum to remove Charles as leader.

Other guests included US President Joe Biden, New Zealand boss Jacinda Ardern, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, senior members of the British royal family, ambassadors from almost every country and foreign royals such as Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and the Kings and queens of the Netherlands, Norway and Spain.

Black suit, no jewelry
The men were asked to come in black suits. Women wore appropriate robes, jewelry was prohibited. Drinks and snacks were served in the Palace Picture Gallery and State Apartments.
