How will the political landscape change with the new SPÖ leader? The “Krone” has seven answers to seven questions.
When a new player appears on the field, the tactics also change. The Well-So-SPÖ boss Andreas Babler is now letting the party strategists go through a few models. The “Krone” tried to find answers to the most important questions.
1. What speaks for new elections?
There is “of course a certain desire to mislead the SPÖ”, says political expert Thomas Hofer. Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) has successfully called new elections twice. Once Wolfgang Bowl benefited from new elections, the second time it went wrong. “That’s why the party headquarters of the ÖVP is certainly considering it,” Hofer said.
2. When would be the ideal time for new elections?
Not in the fall, all experts agree. “You have to develop a story about why you want new elections. Only for reasons of power and tactics it is not well received,” said Hofer. With new elections in the spring, the ÖVP can spare itself the embarrassment of an EU election leader, Othmar Karas, who takes diametrically opposed views.
3. What speaks against a new election?
FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl could currently benefit more from the new elections than the ÖVP. “What also speaks against it is that the ÖVP could not appoint the EU Commissioner. If the coalition holds out until the autumn of 2024, this decision will still be taken under Nehammer,” said Hofer.
4. The new SPÖ leader claims to be chancellor. Is this realistic?
“One question arises: is it more important for Babler to realign the party, or is it about winning the election?” Hofer said. Because if he wants to win, he has to adjust his posts on topics like cannabis, even if the fan base doesn’t like that.
5. Is a traffic light coalition realistic?
Totally unrealistic at the moment.
6. How will Hans Peter Doskosil behave now?
Babeler wants to motivate him to join the party. Doskozil only wants to focus on Burgenland and get the Absolute back. There should be no more comments.
7. How is the relationship between Michael Ludwig and Andreas Babler?
Before the election, a community of convenience, the Vienna will now demand a high price for Babler’s victory.
