Austria and Switzerland will in future act jointly against people smugglers and people who enter the country illegally. A corresponding action plan was signed on Wednesday.
Fight against smugglers and people entering illegally is now also announced on the border of Vorarlberg with Switzerland. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner decided on an action plan on Wednesday together with his Swiss counterpart Karin Keller-Sutter. This provides for joint priority actions against illegal migration at the border and cross-border priority searches. Train traffic between the two countries must also be strictly controlled.
The two interior ministers complain that illegal migration there has increased significantly in recent months. They see the reason for this in the visa policy of the Balkan states. Serbia, in particular, allows people from countries such as India, Pakistan or Tunisia to enter the country without a visa and then travel to the EU with smugglers. However, they have no prospect of a positive asylum decision.
The Swiss and Austrians want to put an end to this secondary migration. A letter to the European Commission is currently being prepared. It calls for more pressure on Serbia to align the country’s visa rules with those of the Schengen area.
